16 Pilots Scheduled: Who Is Teaching the Open Science Lessons

April 3, 2026 Tim Dennis

In January we put out a call for community pilots. Sixteen instructors across the US and UK responded. That’s more than we expected this quickly, and it spans 10 different lessons.

Here’s who’s teaching what:

Two things worth noting. First, two UK institutions are in the mix. These lessons are in the Carpentries Workbench and open to anyone, so that’s not surprising — but it’s good to see. Second, several lessons are getting multiple pilots at different institutions. That’s exactly what moves a lesson from Alpha toward Beta: different instructors, different audiences, different contexts.

We’re still looking for pilots, especially at community colleges, R2s, and public libraries. Most lessons run 1.5 to 4 hours and don’t require specialized expertise. If you want to teach one, open a pilot interest issue or email tdennis@library.ucla.edu.
